Why social recruiting is Tough?

Social Networks have changed many thing and the recruiting is one of them.

People use Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter to connect and share news, jobs and more.

It really feels great to connect with other people - that is just human.

If we look at the data and the past. There are some realities.

  • Job boards are still a #1 source of new hires.
  • Most people used LinkedIn search to source candidates - Not Really Social.
  • Twitter has been used to broadcast jobs and target candidates.
  • Phone is almost always more social than any communication on social networks.
  • Facebook Ads has not been proven to be great in recruiting.

If we look at social networks from a technical perspective it is more or less a database of relationships that we build. Every phone call can be turned into the audience by connecting with the candidate on social networks. These growing audience than can be presented with relevant news, articles and jobs. Engagement always matters. This is more like cultivating a farm. Not a lot of it can be outsourced and recruiters have new role of 'relationship managers' as they engage top talent.

The irony about social recruiting is that - Most requirements that you are working will NOT match the audience that you build on Linked In, Twitter and Facebook. If you try to share the jobs or approach the limited candidates - the matching probability will be very very low.

I think the problem lies deep within the functioning of recruiting industry. Recruiters has been competitive even within an organization. They don't help each other to fill the jobs and for a reason - there is no incentive to help other recruiters to fill postions. Imagine a huge collective audience, everyone in the organization is building. Now imagine if we can post jobs relevant to this audience by selective sharing activity by everyone. This could help leverage that collective social audience that we have been building on Social Networks.

Linked In has changed the way we do business around the globe. Now, we make more informed decisions and connect with professionals around the globe in an online but more personable environement without even needing to meet in person. All the information about a person is on our finger tips and we are able to drive better busienss decisions and recruit top talent as well. Lets do a deeper analysis and find out the Pros and Cons of Linked In from Recruitment Standpoint!
LinkedIn is a boon to recruiters and open database of candidates. Here are pros and cons of LinkedIn from recruitment perspective.

Pros

  • World Standard for Professional Networking - most top people available there!
  • 65+ million profiles and great search sitting on top of it.
  • Good quality candidates available
  • Good for managerial and above positions.
  • Easy to approach using message/InMail


Don't take me wrong. I love LinkedIn and I am a paid member for quite a few months. Let's explore the limitations of Linked In and the facts that will help us recruit better.

Cons

  • Average age of a LinkedIn user is 41 years. If you are looking for younger talent, LinkedIn might not be the best place to look.
  • Very small footprint e.g. Facebook has 500+ million users - Linked In has 1/10th of Facebook.
  • Semi Active, Semi passive candidates with high salary requirements.
  • Red sea strategy - Competing with All Staffing Firms out there approaching the same candidates.
  • Recruiters spamming unknown candidates - Doesn’t bring great results and sometimes results into frustration.
  • Huge time-spend while building fake and unrealistic relationships in the hope of recruitment - Drives high recruitment costs.
